Acquired in 2013 by John Swire & Sons (Green Investments) Limited, a wholly owned Swire group subsidiary, Argent Energy pioneered large-scale commercial biodiesel production in the UK. The Scottish company produces biodiesel and biofuel from waste such as used cooking oil, animal fats and sewer grease, which is sold into the international bulk market and UK road transport market. Argent will be opening a new £75 million biodiesel refinery at Ellesmere Port in early 2017.

Swire Waste Management Limited currently holds two operating contracts to provide waste management services to the Hong Kong Government. The Outlying Islands Transfer Facilities Follow-On Contract commenced in 2013 and involves operating seven marine-based transfer facilities on Hong Kong’s outlying islands. In 2013, Swire Pacific has made a strategic investment in Green Biologics, a UK-based emerging biotechnology developer with offices, laboratories and pilot facilities in Oxfordshire, the UK, and Ohio in the US. Founded in 2003, Green Biologics specialises in manufacturing renewable C4 chemicals and advanced biofuels. The company's core focus is n-butanol, a chemical precursor for paints, coatings, adhesives, inks, plastics, pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, household cleaners and personal care products. It has developed advanced fermentation technology to produce renewable n-butanol from a wide range of second generation feed stocks, including organic residuals from the agricultural and forestry industries, and municipal solid waste.
In 2013, Swire Pacific acquired a minority stake in NanoSpun Technologies, a company which focuses on the development of smart fibres, fabricated using innovative, cutting-edge and proprietary nanotechnology processes. The company produces micro/nano-structured fibres/mats and products that are environmentally-friendly, highly-efficient, cost-effective and easy to use, for a variety of industries and applications. These applications include biologically-based water, wastewater, oil spills and petroleum products treatment, clean energy applications, medical, and health products.
In 2014, Swire Pacific acquired a minority stake in Avantium, a technology company which specialises in high-throughput, advanced catalytic research. The company's YXY technology platform enables it to catalytically convert renewable plant-based materials into bio-based chemicals and bioplastics. Avantium's lead application, polyethylene-furanoate (PEF), is a novel 100% bio-based polyester, which has enhanced properties compared to conventional packaging materials, enabling new packaging innovations. It aims to replace polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) as a bio-based plastic for a range of applications including bottles, film and fibres.
Wholly owned by Cathay Pacific Airways, Vogue Laundry has a client base of international airlines and hotels, and many well-known clubs and institutions in Hong Kong. The company is currently constructing a new plant to assist with its long-term business expansion. The new plant will become Asia's largest single-site laundry and will be fully operational by the second quarter of 2017.
