2012 Treasures from the Deep

Marine Services

Swire Seabed provides a range of underwater services to the offshore industry, including rig and sub-sea pipeline surveys. Its sophisticated remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) have also been deployed in a number of high-profile salvage operations. In 2012, Seabed Worker salvaged over 50 tonnes of silver bullion from the British steamer, Gairsoppa, torpedoed during World War II; the wreck lay in 4,700 metres of water, southwest of Ireland. The following year, Seabed Worker recovered parts of two F-1 engines used in the 1969 Apollo 11 space mission that landed the first men on the moon; the rockets were located in waters three miles deep off Cape Canaveral.
